Jake and I just had the BEST trip to Greece. We started out in Athens and then headed to Santorini. If you are planning to head to Athens soon, this article is for you!
Planning our Trip
We planned the trip about 2 weeks out and it really wasn’t that big of a challenge finding airline tickets and AirBnBs. We used this really amazing and super helpful app called Skiplagged. It’s this awesome app where you choose your departing airport and then your destination and pulls up all of the cheapest flights. Then you go to the actual airline website and find the flight and it actually may even be cheaper on there! This app works in the states and also helps with hotels. (**tip: if you choose your departing airport, you can choose the destination option as ‘anywhere’ and it’ll bring up the cheapest flights for your dates to any destination!). We ended up flying EasyJet to Athens, RyanAir from Athens to Santorini and then Norwegian Airlines from Santorini to Gatwick.
For our accommodations we started out by checking the Marriot and Hilton hotels in the areas so we could get and use points, but there was nothing very reasonable. So we decided to use Airbnb. We stayed in the cutest little apartment with a beautiful garden just minutes away from all of the tourist attractions. If you are going to be in Athens, I highly recommend this place. Itinerary
Night 1
We arrived pretty late into Athens on Monday night, but we were STARVED and ready for a drink. The culture in Greece is different than America or the UK because they don’t typically eat dinner until 10 or 11pm. So we had plenty of time to check into our Airbnb and walk to downtown. We knew we had to try the famous gyro, so we stumbled across Piotita Paliakis that looked pretty popular and ordered delicious gyros and Greek wine and beer. I definitely recommend coming here if you want to try an authentic gyro! I got the chicken and Jake got the pork.

After this, we were exhausted from traveling so headed home to rest up for our jam packed day tomorrow.
Day 1
Stop 1: Panathenaic Stadium
This is such a sight to see!! This is where the first modern Olympic Games were held. It is absolutely beautiful, the entire stadium is made of marble. You can pay to go inside and walk around (5 Euros I believe), or you can get a good view from the outside, which is what we did.

Stop 2: From there head over to the Temple of Olympian Zeus. In order to get into all of these historical sights, you do have to pay. We decided that since we wanted to go to all of them that we were going to get then 5 day inclusive pass. The passes were 30 euros per person and it got you into the following:
- Acropolis and Slopes
- Ancient Agora
- Hadrian’s Library
- Kerameikos
- Aristotle’s School
- Olympieion
- Roman Agora
So anyways, the Temple of Olympian Zeus was absolutely beautiful. There was a bit of construction going on, but I assume that is how it always is with how old it is. Make sure to walk around the entire site because there is a lot to see.

Stop 3: Next we headed towards the Parthenon and to Dionysos Theatre, which is right below the Parthenon & is included in the Acropolis and Slopes in the 5 day pass. All I can say is WOW. The view of the Acropolis from here is so cool, and this stadium is incredibly old beautiful. It’s a sight to see.

Stop 4: on your way up to the Parthenon, you will also pass by Herodes Theatre. You should for sure stop and look around and take some pics.

Stop 5: We made it to the Acropolis! It is quite the walk and is very slippery, so make sure you watch your step. This way by far my favorite part of the day. The view of the city from up here is incredible.

Stop 6: After we made it down the mountain, we stopped for a little snack and drink at Souvlaki Bar. It was ok, but nothing too special. We had pita bread & some Greek wine and then went on our way again!

Stop 7: Next we headed to the Hellenic Parliament. Every hour, on the hour, 24 hours a day, they do a Changing of the Guards. This was really cool to see!!! This is a must. It lasted about 10 minutes and was very interesting.

Stop 8: At this point we were starving and thirsty, so we made a stop at By the Glass, it’s this adorable wine bar! I had some Prosecco and Jake had some Greek wine, and we shared a basket of bread (again lol). I defiantly recommend this place for wine lovers. It has a huge selections of wine!!

Stop 9: We headed home to nap and change for our night out!
Stop 10: This was by far my favorite part of the entire trip! We knew we wanted to go to a nice dinner, and our lovely Airbnb hosts recommended this place! It is at the top of the highest hill in Athens, called Mont Lycabettus. Even if you do not want to have dinner up here, I recommended going to the stop just to get a view of the beautiful city. In order to get to the top, you need to take a cable car. It was about 6 Euros per person for round trip! When we reached the top, we took some pictures of the sunset, and then found our restaurant.
Stop 11: Dinner at Opizonies. Oh my goodness, I cannot say enough good things about this place. It was absolutely beautiful and the food was delish!! As we ate, we had an amazing view of the Parthenon lit up at night. It was spectacular. I enjoyed rice pilaf with chicken and Jake got a huge Greek Salad. It was soooo yummy. This is a have to destination if you are in Athens.
Stop 12: Bed time!!
Day 2
Stop 1: We decided to have breakfast today (lol), and stopped at a cute little bakery called, Lulu’s Bakery and Deli to have a Greek donut and a Greek coffee (yum!)

Stop 2: After we ate, we headed off to the Acropolis Museum. We decided to do this today and not yesterday when we went to Acropolis because we were so hot and sweaty after walking so much, we wanted to be able to enjoy the museum. This museum is not included in your 5 day pass, but I believe the entrance fee was about 10 Euros per person. This museum was so amazing! It is pretty new, and has 4 floors. It was so cool to see everything and how people lived back then.

Stop 3: Next we headed to Kermeikos Ancient Cemetery. This is included in your 5 day pass!

Stop 4: Ancient Agora. All of these places that we did today are pretty closely located to each other, so the walks weren’t bad. But there is public transpiration available to you. Jake and I did not use it, so I cannot offer any advice, but it is readily accessible.

Stop 5: Hadrian’s Library

Stop 6: Time for a drink!! We headed to A for Athens, which is a rooftop bar! This place had amazing views and super cool drinks. I totally recommend.

Stop 7: Roman Agora

Stop 8: Aristotle’s School– This is a little bit out of the way and a bit of a walk! I sadly didn’t get any photos here! But it was still really cool to see.
Stop 9: Home for a nap and to clean up for dinner. We went to Brigante for a casual dinner that night.
We had a wonderful time in Athens and I would 100% go back. Please let me know if you have any questions about our stay, I would love to answer. Next, we headed to Santorini, Greece!
