Athens, Greece 2 Day Itinerary

Jake and I just had the BEST trip to Greece. We started out in Athens and then headed to Santorini. If you are planning to head to Athens soon, this article is for you!

Planning our Trip

We planned the trip about 2 weeks out and it really wasn’t that big of a challenge finding airline tickets and AirBnBs. We used this really amazing and super helpful app called Skiplagged. It’s this awesome app where you choose your departing airport and then your destination and pulls up all of the cheapest flights. Then you go to the actual airline website and find the flight and it actually may even be cheaper on there! This app works in the states and also helps with hotels. (**tip: if you choose your departing airport, you can choose the destination option as ‘anywhere’ and it’ll bring up the cheapest flights for your dates to any destination!). We ended up flying EasyJet to Athens, RyanAir from Athens to Santorini and then Norwegian Airlines from Santorini to Gatwick.

For our accommodations we started out by checking the Marriot and Hilton hotels in the areas so we could get and use points, but there was nothing very reasonable. So we decided to use Airbnb. We stayed in the cutest little apartment with a beautiful garden just minutes away from all of the tourist attractions. If you are going to be in Athens, I highly recommend this place. Athens Airbnb

Itinerary

Night 1

We arrived pretty late into Athens on Monday night, but we were STARVED and ready for a drink. The culture in Greece is different than America or the UK because they don’t typically eat dinner until 10 or 11pm. So we had plenty of time to check into our Airbnb and walk to downtown. We knew we had to try the famous gyro, so we stumbled across Piotita Paliakis that looked pretty popular and ordered delicious gyros and Greek wine and beer. I definitely recommend coming here if you want to try an authentic gyro! I got the chicken and Jake got the pork.

After this, we were exhausted from traveling so headed home to rest up for our jam packed day tomorrow.

Day 1

Stop 1: Panathenaic Stadium

This is such a sight to see!! This is where the first modern Olympic Games were held. It is absolutely beautiful, the entire stadium is made of marble. You can pay to go inside and walk around (5 Euros I believe), or you can get a good view from the outside, which is what we did.

Stop 2: From there head over to the Temple of Olympian Zeus. In order to get into all of these historical sights, you do have to pay. We decided that since we wanted to go to all of them that we were going to get then 5 day inclusive pass. The passes were 30 euros per person and it got you into the following:

  • Acropolis and Slopes
  • Ancient Agora
  • Hadrian’s Library
  • Kerameikos
  • Aristotle’s School
  • Olympieion
  • Roman Agora

So anyways, the Temple of Olympian Zeus was absolutely beautiful. There was a bit of construction going on, but I assume that is how it always is with how old it is. Make sure to walk around the entire site because there is a lot to see.

Stop 3: Next we headed towards the Parthenon and to Dionysos Theatre, which is right below the Parthenon & is included in the Acropolis and Slopes in the 5 day pass. All I can say is WOW. The view of the Acropolis from here is so cool, and this stadium is incredibly old beautiful. It’s a sight to see.

Stop 4: on your way up to the Parthenon, you will also pass by Herodes Theatre. You should for sure stop and look around and take some pics.

Stop 5: We made it to the Acropolis! It is quite the walk and is very slippery, so make sure you watch your step. This way by far my favorite part of the day. The view of the city from up here is incredible.

Stop 6: After we made it down the mountain, we stopped for a little snack and drink at Souvlaki Bar. It was ok, but nothing too special. We had pita bread & some Greek wine and then went on our way again!

IMG_2862

Stop 7: Next we headed to the Hellenic Parliament. Every hour, on the hour, 24 hours a day, they do a Changing of the Guards. This was really cool to see!!! This is a must. It lasted about 10 minutes and was very interesting.

IMG_2869

Stop 8:  At this point we were starving and thirsty, so we made a stop at By the Glass, it’s this adorable wine bar! I had some Prosecco and Jake had some Greek wine, and we shared a basket of bread (again lol). I defiantly recommend this place for wine lovers. It has a huge selections of wine!!

IMG_2890

Stop 9: We headed home to nap and change for our night out!

Stop 10: This was by far my favorite part of the entire trip! We knew we wanted to go to a nice dinner, and our lovely Airbnb hosts recommended this place! It is at the top of the highest hill in Athens, called Mont Lycabettus. Even if you do not want to have dinner up here, I recommended going to the stop just to get a view of the beautiful city. In order to get to the top, you need to take a cable car. It was about 6 Euros per person for round trip! When we reached the top, we took some pictures of the sunset, and then found our restaurant.

Stop 11: Dinner at Opizonies. Oh my goodness, I cannot say enough good things about this place. It was absolutely beautiful and the food was delish!! As we ate, we had an amazing view of the Parthenon lit up at night. It was spectacular. I enjoyed rice pilaf with chicken and Jake got a huge Greek Salad. It was soooo yummy. This is a have to destination if you are in Athens.

Stop 12: Bed time!!

Day 2

Stop 1: We decided to have breakfast today (lol), and stopped at a cute little bakery called, Lulu’s Bakery and Deli to have a Greek donut and a Greek coffee (yum!)

Stop 2: After we ate, we headed off to the Acropolis Museum. We decided to do this today and not yesterday when we went to Acropolis because we were so hot and sweaty after walking so much, we wanted to be able to enjoy the museum. This museum is not included in your 5 day pass, but I believe the entrance fee was about 10 Euros per person. This museum was so amazing! It is pretty new, and has 4 floors. It was so cool to see everything and how people lived back then.

Stop 3: Next we headed to Kermeikos Ancient Cemetery. This is included in your 5 day pass!

Stop 4: Ancient Agora. All of these places that we did today are pretty closely located to each other, so the walks weren’t bad. But there is public transpiration available to you. Jake and I did not use it, so I cannot offer any advice, but it is readily accessible.

Stop 5: Hadrian’s Library

Stop 6: Time for a drink!! We headed to A for Athens, which is a rooftop bar! This place had amazing views and super cool drinks. I totally recommend.

Stop 7: Roman Agora

Stop 8: Aristotle’s School– This is a little bit out of the way and a bit of a walk! I sadly didn’t get any photos here! But it was still really cool to see.

Stop 9: Home for a nap and to clean up for dinner. We went to Brigante for a casual dinner that night.

We had a wonderful time in Athens and I would 100% go back. Please let me know if you have any questions about our stay, I would love to answer. Next, we headed to Santorini, Greece!

Mozzarella Balsamic Vinaigrette Chicken

YALL, all I can say is YUM. I made this for dinner last night and Jake asked me to make it again tonight lol. It’s the perfect combination of sweet and salty. Details below.

Ingredients

  • Skinless chicken breast- I only used 2 but you could use as many as you want and just add a bit to each ingredient
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • 5 cloves of garlic-cut in halves or thirds
  • 2 cups of cherry tomatoes-or any tomatoes you have around (halve them or cut into small pieces)
  • 1/2 of an onion chopped
  • 1/4 cup of balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup of mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 2 tablespoons of fresh chopped parsley to garnish

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 430 degrees F
  2. Place your chicken breasts in a baking dish and drizzle with olive oil
  3. Season the chicken breast with your Italian seasoning and salt and pepper. Rub the seasoning all over chicken. Flip the breasts and repeat on the other side.
  4. Make sure your onion, tomatoes and garlic are cut up. Arrange them around the chicken breasts
  5. In a bowl, whisk together balsamic vinegar and brown sugar
  6. Pour this mixture over the chicken. Flip the breasts and do the same on the other side making sure they are coated
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until cooked all the way through
  8. When they are done, take them out and sprinkle mozzarella cheese over the top of each
  9. Put back in the oven and either broil or cook for an extra 4 minutes. Or until cheese is melted
  10. Top with parsley & enjoy!

Side Suggestions

  • I served mine with butter Parmesan garlic noodles, and used the extra sauce from pan and drizzled over the top along with garlic Parmesan green beans. If you would like those recipes let me know!
  • Blueberry Banana Oat Bread

Looking for a *kinda* healthy dessert this fall? This blueberry banana oat bread is to DIE for and you can easily make it healthier than I did. Step by step directions below.

    Ingredients

You don’t need too many ingredients which I always like

    You’ll need:

    • 1 1/4 cup (175 g) of old fashioned oats (I didn’t have plain oats, so I used my honey granola and it was delish)
    • 1 1/4 cup (175 g) of flour
    • 1/3 cup of sugar (you may use cane sugar to make healthier)
    • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
    • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
    • Pinch of salt
    • 3 ripe bananas
    • 1/4 cup of milk (you may use almond milk for a healthier alternative)
    • 1 cup of fresh or frozen blueberries
    • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
    • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon

    Step by Step

    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
    2. Grease a 9 x 5 loaf pan lightly
    3. Combine your dry ingredients in medium sized mixing bowl: flour, oats, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon
    4. Mash the bananas in a small bowl using a fork or a hand masher
    5. Add the mashed bananas to the dry ingredients
    6. Add the milk and vanilla to that mixture and combine (I added my cinnamon here because I forgot to add it with my dry ingredients)
    7. Add the blueberries and combine
    8. Pour mixture into your pan
    9. Optional: sprinkle extra blueberries, oats and a little sugar on top of loaf
    10. Put pan in oven and bake for 50-55 minuets. Rotate the pan halfway through. Put a toothpick or fork in middle to see if baked all the way through
    11. Cool for 15 mins
    12. Enjoy!!

Let me know how you like this recipe & if you’d like to see more 🙂

    Traveling to London

Hey peeps. Sorry I have been MIA. I officially moved to England last week and we have been go go go ever since! Before we settled in to our new home, Southampton, England, we did a weekend trip to London. If you’re interested in traveling to London in the future, continue reading for tips and recommendations!

    Money

First off, London is SOOOO expensive. Like insane, but worth it. My recommendation to you is to convert some money before you come over so you don’t get whacked with the large fees at the airport currency exchange kiosks. In addition, there are ATMs all over the place, but you will have to pay a fee every time you use them. I have a Discover credit card, and they have no foreign transaction fees but nowhere over here do they accept Discover. So it’s kind of pointless. We have been using mostly cash to make our purchases.

    Hotel

Jake and I stayed in the brand newHilton Garden Inn at London Heathrow Terminal 2. We decided to stay here because we had so much luggage and didn’t want to deal with getting a taxi into the heart of the city. This hotel was so nice! I’m so glad we stayed there. It looked right out onto the runway of the airport, which was so cool! You didn’t hear a single thing, which I was worried about. But it was totally fine! The train station was right there in the airport, so that was super convenient. We would just get on and it was like a 45 minute ride into the city. Not bad at all!

The hotel had a restaurant and a bar. We didn’t go to the restaurant, but we did go to the amazing runway rooftop bar. If you stay here, you HAVE to go to this bar. It was at the top of the hotel, and it looked over the runway. There was an outside terrace where you could go sit, or you could sit inside with a perfect view of the planes taking off because it was all glass. We enjoyed a bottle of wine for Jakes birthday here!

    The Tube

This is how Jake and I got around to all of the special places in London. I recommend doing the off-peak day pass for the tube if you plan on going all around London. It was 13 pounds and you could go on it as many times as you wanted all day (just not during the peak times of 6-9am and 4-7pm, Monday-Friday … the entire weekend is considered off-peak LOL). Yes, you might run into some sketchy people, and yes it is sweltering hot, but it is the cheapest option to get around London.

Jake on the tube for the first time!

    Restaurant and Bar Recommendations

    1. Camden Market

This is a must! This is a huge market filled with different food vendors and shops!! There’s literally every type of food you can imagine. There’s “Asian alley”,”Italian alley” and all different types of allies filled with TONS of food vendors. So whatever you’re in the mood for you can find. Along with a ton of street shopping and cool desserts.

    2. The Rooftop Saint James

Such a cool place & bar!! This place was a tad expensive (we paid nearly 45 pounds for 2 drinks) but the views of the city were so worth it. If you’re looking for trendy and unusual drinks and a good view, come here for sure. Jake got the famous gin and Tonic and I got a guava Bellini. Delish!!!

    3. Vapiano

Okay so not my absolute fav place in the world. Located next to the London Bridge, this is an Italian restaurant. The way you order your food was VERY different than what I’m used to. You get a little card when you enter along with your menus, you pick your table and then your food. When you have decided what you want to eat, you go up to either the pizza bar or pasta bar and order your meal. They scan your card and then when you’re ready to pay, you bring your card to the register and they scan it again and it brings up your total. The food was mediocre, we weren’t impressed honestly. It was our last option because quite a few places were closed on Sunday.

I got ravioli and Jake got bbq chicken pizza

    4. Kensington Creperie

I think this is my favorite place we went in all of London!!!! It’s a little cafe with delicious crepes. There’s so many you can choose from, it was so hard for us to decide. We finally decided on one sweet one, kinder bar and one meat one, chicken fajita. It was SOOOO yummy. I also got an iced coffee, and when I asked for cream they thought I was asking for whipped cream so make sure you are specific haha. You can also get many other things but they are known for their crepes!

    5. Gordon’s Wine Bar

Y’all this is the cutest place ever!!!! It is the oldest wine bar in London, established in 1890. It’s underground, with indoor and outdoor seating. Inside it looks like a cave and it’s super cool, and outside you sit right by a beautiful garden! We chose to sit outside. You go in and order your wine and cheese and bring it outside to enjoy the fresh air. We had so much fun here. This place is a must!

     Sunnies: https://amzn.to/30V8g7X

    6. Mestizo Mexican Restaurant

We were really feeling Mexican food this night, so we hunted this place down and boy were we happy! They have the coolest option called the taco platter. This is where if you have 2 people, you get 4 tortillas each and together you pick 4 different meat fillings and then it comes with all of the different toppings all in a little tray! And you make your own tacos. This was really cool if you couldn’t make up your mind with what taco you wanted because this way you could try 4 different kinds and customize them how you like. It was delish and so were their margs.

    Tips and Tricks

    1. They don’t give you water in England unless you ask. But they will charge you unless you specifically ask for tap water. If you don’t ask for tap water, they will give you still or sparkling and tack on at least 5 pounds to your bill. Jake and I went without water for like 5 days because we didn’t want to pay for it (lol) but then realized you could ask for tap.
    2. Tip is often already included in your bill at restaurants and bars so you don’t have to tip extra!
    3. Since tip is already included and their not working for your money, you don’t get waited on too much. Most of the time you seat yourself at restaurants and you order your food at the bar and tell them your table number. We learned this the hard way when we waited forever for someone to come take our order and then no one ever did.

    4. Liquor is pretty expensive over here. So I have been sticking to cider most of the time! But I have seen their big thing is 2-4-1 drinks for a certain time of the day. This is when I’ll get liquor.

    5. Wear comfy shoes because you’ll be walking around a ton!

    6. The weather is kind of unpredictable, so bring an umbrella with you.

    7. Ooooh also! You have to ask for the bill. They don’t just bring it to you. So make sure to ask or you’ll sit there for 30 minutes like us haha.

The BEST Money Saving Apps you HAVE to Have

  • 1. The Starbucks app
  • If you love Starbucks you HAVE to have this app. First of all you get notifications for when there are Starbucks happy hours and when they are having their deals. Second, if you sign up and add money and pay with your Starbucks card on your phone, you earn points. For every dollar you spend, you earn 2 points. These points can be used for a number of things.

    Such as

    • 25 points- espresso shot, or special syrup
    • 50 points- hot coffee, bakery item or hot tea
    • 150 points- handcrafted drink, hot breakfast or parfait
    • 200 points- lunch sandwich, protein box or salad
    • 400 points- select merchandise or at home coffee

So basically I wait until I get 150 points and buy the biggest most complicated drink ever that costs $7 (venti iced caramel macchiato with only one shot of espresso, 2 extra pumps of vanilla, extra EXTRA caramel drizzle and whip cream) for FREE!

Another reason I love it is that if you are gifted a Starbucks gift card, you can so,ply upload it to your Starbucks app and can throw away the physical gift card! And you still get credit with the points. It’s really such a great app, I totally recommend getting it.

    2. Target Cartwheel

Do y’all love target as much as me?! Okay then you need this app. Cartwheel is the bomb. Basically, there are select deals and offers for cartwheel users only. So when you’re shopping at Target you walk around with your phone and scan every item you are buying and if there’s a deal on it, it adds it to your “wallet” and then at check out you scan your barcode and it takes all of that money off! It’s amazing. I have been a cartwheel user for a year now and I have nearly saved $500 using it.

    3. Ibotta

Ibotta is a cash back app. Every time you shop at participating locations (Publix, target, Walmart, basically anywhere) you add things that you purchased to your ibotta cart and then scan your receipt and they give you cash back for your products. When you earn $20 or more, you’re able to select if you want them to Venmo you or use PayPal and they send you the money right away. Easy cash!!

    4. Walmart Grocery

Okay if you’re anything like me, you despise going into Walmart but LOVE their cheap prices. Well, the Walmart Grocery app just saved your life. Shop right on your phone, schedule a time for pickup, drive to Walmart, check in on the app, wait for your shopper to bring your things to your car, thank them and drive away. That simple.

    5. 711

You might think I am crazy but y’all have to try 711’s ice coffee. It’s to die for!!! But before you do that download the app and scan your phone every time you make a purchase there and very 7th coffee you purchase is free!! Same with Gatorade, Mountain Dew, and water bottle.

    6. RakutenEbates

Okay I lied, I think this is my favorite app. It may sound too good to be true because that’s what I thought but I was wrong. If you’re an online shopper like I am you need this app. So every time you make an online purchase, go through this app or website first. Type in the website in their search bar and click shop, and then whatever you purchase on that website there is a certain percentage of cash back that you get. Every quarter they send you a check for all of your shopping!!! It has been amazing and I have been a user for years.

    7. McDonald’s

Another goodie! The McDonald’s app!!! Make an account and automatically get the amazing deals. Every day there are new deals on the app. Such as free fries, free coffee or burgers. It’s amazing you have to have it.

    8. Chick-fil-A

Everyone’s favorite fast food restaurant with DEALS!!!! Get the app, make an account and BAM free chick in your hands. All my treasure coast people, the owner of the Stuart Chick-fil-A gives a free item basically everyday. You just have to go into the app, go to rewards and look!! I haven’t paid for a full Chick-fil-A meal since I got this app. If you don’t have a free reward, you can upload mine to your Chick-fil-A account, and pay like that. That gives you points which you can redeem on goodies!!! It’s the best.

Let me know if anyone you try out these apps and what you think of them. Also, what are your favorite apps?!

    Honeymoon Review

Jake & I had the best time on our honeymoon to Sandals Montego Bay in Jamaica! Honestly it was the best week ever. A lot of people have asked for my review of the resort so here’s the scoop!

First off, Jake was a little bit skeptical about the resort. He thought it was too good to be true, as it was all-inclusive food and drink for the entire week. I had been to one of the Beaches Resorts before, their sister resort for families, with my family so I knew what I was getting!

We flew JetBlue to Montego Bay and our flight was delayed (bummer), and then JetBlue lost Jakes luggage. It ended up on a random plane hours later. Don’t ask me how that happened, or how I was feeling at that time lol. Something that we would FOR SURE do again if we went back to Montego Bay, is Club Mobay. The airport in Jamaica is not the most amazing place in the world, there is no air conditioning, people everywhere and no where really to eat. Oh and you have to wait HOURS in customs. So, what happened was right when we got off of the plane there was chauffeur holding a sign with our names on it. We went with him and we got to skip the entire customs line. Literally we got through customs in 10 minutes. They take you to get your bags (we had a little hiccup but thats not their fault). Then they take you to their arrival club and there is an open bar and food! They then make the process so easy of getting you into a private luxury car for your ride to the resort. So that whole process was amazing. But on the way back to the US it was even better. Since we got there early for our flight, we got to go to their departure lounge and hang out in there with wifi, air conditioning, an open bar, and free food! It was so nice and well worth the $80 a person.

Once we arrived to the resort, we were greeted with cold towels and rum punch! We had to go through the check in process at sandals which takes a little bit of time. Especially since we had been traveling all day and I was in leggings sweating in the tropics. But besides the length of check in everything was great. Our room was beautiful!

So much to Jake’s amazement, we could have as many drinks and eat at as many restaurants and order whatever we wanted as many times as we wanted! That was honestly the best part, I was eating and drinking constantly.

There were 12 restaurants on the property:

    • Bayside restaurant- on the water, different country cuisine buffet daily for lunch
    • Oleander Room- on the water, has great breakfast
    • Cucina Romana- italian, have to have reservations, our LEAST favorite restaurant
    • Tokyo Joes- my personal FAV, make your own stir fry, you go and put what you want in it and then they make it in front of you, AMAZING
    • Stew Fish: seafood on the ocean
    • The Cricketers Pub- English pub with English food, pretty good and they had a lot of beer that Jake liked
    • Dinos- Pizzeria on the ocean, went there at least twice a day for a pizza
    • Mariners Grill- open until 5am so we would go for chicken fingers and fries
    • Cafe de Paris- this is where I would get my coffee everyday, I also got a crepe from here daily, they have gelato and pastries
    • The Jerk Shack- everyone hyped this place up but Jake and I weren’t fans, it is jerk chicken and pork
    • Butch’s Steak House- another fav! You have to make reservations, but its a delicious steak house. If I could go back, I would go every night
    • Soy- sushi place, not my fav because they didn’t have much besides sushi but Jake loved it
    Bayside
    Cucina Romana
    Butchs steak house dessert
    View from the Oleander Room
    Pastries from Cafe De Paris

Each day there were like 30 activities to do! We played a lot of couples volleyball that was fun. There were things like minute to win it, beer pong, ping pong tourney, scavenger hunts etc. It was really fun! Jake and I did a lot of laying around and relaxing, but if you are into that kind of stuff, there were a lot of options.

There were also a lot of water sports included. One day we went snorkeling. It was fun, but nothing we hadn’t seen before coming from Florida. We also went tubing, which was super intense but fun. You could also go kayaking, paddle boarding, boating etc.

We did not do any excursions because we had everything we needed right in front of us. But something cool we got to do was go to the other Sandals resort right down the road. In Montego Bay there are 3 Sandals resorts and when you book to stay at one of them, you can go to all of them and they provide transportation. So we decided to go to one for dinner one night. We took the shuttle over (5 minute ride), and we had reservations for dinner at their restaurant on their private island. The restaurant was thai food which I LOVE but Jake isn’t the biggest fan. We explored the resort, and had dinner. This resort was nice, but in my opinion ours was the best! If I went back, I would stay at Sandals Montego Bay again.

Overall, the honeymoon was amazing and the resort was too!!! I recommend it over and over again. The staff was so great and personable and you are never bored and never hungry or thirsty.

    Hello!

First off, HELLO!!! My name is Anna and I have no idea what I am doing (lol literally). I decided to start a blog for a few reasons. Let’s be honest, the main reason is because I just recently gave up my job as a teacher and basically my whole life to move across the world for my beloved husband ;). Don’t get me wrong, I am so excited to be living in England, but when you can’t work because you aren’t able to get a working visa (thanks Navy), what am I supposed to do?! So I decided to try this whole blogging thing. I tried the instagram blogger thing last summer, but got busy with teaching and didn’t stick it out. But now all I have is TIME!!! Another reason is that a lot of people have inspired me and asked me to document my travels, outfits, activities etc. so I thought this would be the perfect way!

    A little about me:

    • My name is Anna Bakkedahl
    • I am from Palm City, Florida
    • I am 22 years old
    • I just got married to my high school sweetheart, Jake
    • I graduated from the University of South Florida in 2018
    • I am (I guess was) a 1st grade teacher but hope to continue that profession when I move back to the States
    • Jake and I are living in Annapolis, Maryland until mid August so Jake can work at the Naval Academy and then we are moving to Southampton, England until October of 2020

So basically I am going to be writing about my time in England, traveling around the world & maybe some fashion things here and there! Whatever the people want. Leave a comment below of what content you would like to see in the future!!

    xx
